The Navajo people started receiving Christ in ever increasing numbers back around 1970. Before that you could go to just about any community on the reservation and find just a few Christians. Those who became Christians often had to leave their homes and live on the colonial mission compounds because of persecution.
But then in about 1970 larger numbers of Navajo people began to respond to the gospel. Between 1979 and 2003 the Navajo Church grew by a whopping 500% !
I've been a minister on the reservation since 1979, and I've seen a corresponding growth in maturity in some churches.
This people movement to Christ needs your support, prayers, and involvement. While the church at Ganado has learned grace and is governed by grace, many other Navajo churches continue to struggle against legalism and decision theology.
