Navajo Ministry
For it is good that the heart be esbalished by grace. Hebrews 13:9
Back in 1980, when I first came to the Navajo reservation, there were not many people interested in reading books. That's because the English language was still a mystery to people who lived in the rural areas. They would often ask me, "What does 'wisdom' mean?" That was a good question. Or, "What is 'redemption' ?" That question was easy to answer in Navajo. In those days I concentrated on teaching people to read their Navajo Bibles. If they didn't have one I tried to get one for them. I remember the reverence they had for God's Word in their own language.
Things are a little different now. I no longer work in a rural area. Most of the Navajo people at Ganado are well educated and have good jobs. So our ministry is different. We give away a lot of good Christian books and videos through our "bookmobile" ministry. People take these books and read them avidly. We have given away over 500 Navajo Bibles, hundreds of Daily Devotions, some Christian videos featuring community transformation, a few music CDs, and lots of other books including "Shadow Boxing" by Dr. Henry Malone, and "When Trust is Broken" a small book dealing with recovery from sexual abuse, by
Dr. Dan Allender. The response has been so overwhelming that I would say the book-
mobile ministry is one of the best things we have ever done. We definitely plan to
continue this vital outreach as funds permit. (We still give out Navajo Bibles)
