Solid Rock
1 Jesus, who had once been a carpenter (only a little more than a year earlier), concluded His Sermon on the Mount with this parable...
Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine; and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: and the rain descended, the floods came and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock. Matthew 7:24-25
2 This is good advice for anyone who is thinking about getting married. The wind and the rain will surely come. Floods will come. Your house must be built upon solid rock - otherwise it will fall.
For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.
I Corinthians 3:113 Jesus promised the power and blessings of heaven on earth. Wind, rain, and even floods will come, but the solid rock stands firm. Unlike the false followers, the man who hears Jesus' sayings and does them has built upon this solid rock.
4 The ungodly are not so, but are like the chaff which the wind blows away...
But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell, And great was its fall. Matthew 7:26-27
5 When Jesus had finished His sayings, the crowds were absolutely astonished beyond words - dumbfounded! The people sat in totally stone cold, stunned, stupified silence for at least a few minutes. They had been gathered at the feet of the Son of God, listening to every word, dreading to miss even one. Slowly, as they realized He had finished speaking, they began talking, first in hushed tones of awe, then a murmur that became a low roar - NO ONE in the entire history of earth had ever spoken this way - and NO ONE ever would again. They could not rise to their feet. Not just yet. They would linger. Some were probably crying quietly. No doubt others were weeping openly. They knew they had found the long awaited redeemer of man. Like the Samaritans a few months before, they would believe in this Messiah - for they too had heard Him speak, and they felt His compassion. They would follow.
6 Others were there that day who may not have believed that Jesus was the Messiah. Nevertheless they also felt in awe of Him.
And it was so, that when Jesus had ended these sayings; that the people were astonished (dumbfounded or stupefied), at His teaching. For He taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes. Matthew 7:28-29
7 It is entirely certain from Matthew's accounting of it, that this Sermon on the Mount was given on one occasion. Matthew makes that plain by writing, "when Jesus had ended these sayings." Now recorded for all time the Sermon on the Mount continues to change the destiny of nations. Those who hear these words and do them ...will be changed - forever.
