38.1 Moving from Nazareth to Jerusalem Jesus had to pass through Cana. A nobleman from Capernaum met Him there, asking Him to heal his son.
And there was a certain nobleman whose son was sick at Capernaum. When he heard that Jesus had come out of Judea into Galilee, he went to Him and implored Him to come down and heal his son, for he was at the point of death. Then Jesus said to him, "Unless you people see signs and wonders, you will by no means believe."
The nobleman said to Him, "Sir, come down before my child dies!"
Jesus said to him, "Go your way; your son lives."
So the man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him, and he went his way.
And as he was now going down, his servants met him and told him, saying, "Your son lives!" Then he inquired of them the hour when he got better. And they said to him, "Yesterday at the seventh hour (about one in the afternoon), the fever left him. So the father knew that it was at the same hour in which Jesus said to him, "Your son lives." And he himself believed, and his whole household.
John 4:46-5438.2 This was the second miracle Jesus had done in Galilee. He would do thousands more.
38.3 A few days later, Jesus performed another notable miracle...
Then He went down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and was teaching them on the Sabbaths. And they were astonished at His teaching, for His word was with authority.
Now in the synagogue there was a man who had a spirit of an unclean demon. And he cried out with a loud voice, saying, "Let us alone! What have we to do with You, Jesus of Nazareth? Di You come to destroy us? I know who You are - the Holy One of God!
But Jesus rebuked him saying, "Be quiet, and come out of him!" And when the demon had thrown him in their midst, it came out of him and did not hurt him.
Then they were all amazed and spoke among themselves, saying, "What a word this is!* For with authority and power He comands the unclean spirits, and they come out."
And the report about Him went out into every place in the surrounding region. Luke 4:31-37
* The word of course was Jesus' preaching (proclaiming) the kingdom (rulership) of God -- who was now HERE in the person of His Son. This word (the gospel) had power -- they could see it in the miracles Jesus was doing.
38.4 Later that day, Jesus performed still another miracle.
Now He arose from the synagogue and entered Simon's house. But simon's wife's mother was sick with a high fever, and they made request of Him concerning her. So He stood over her and rebuked the fever (told it to stop), and it left her. And immediately she arose and served them.
Luke 4:38-3938.5 Jesus had done three notable miracles in a short time. Of course the whole town heard of it.
When the sun was setting, all those who had any that were sick with various diseases brought them to Him; and He laid His hands on every one of them and healed them.
and demons also came out of many, crying out and saying "You are the Christ, the Son of God!" And He, rebuking them, did not allow them to speak, for they knew that He was the Christ.
Luke 4:40-4138.6 This healing and deliverance service probably lasted all night.
"Now when it was day, He departed and went into a deserted place. And the crowd sought Him and came to Him, and tried to keep Him from leaving them; But He said to them, "I must preach the kingdom of God to the other cities also, because for this purpose I have been sent."
Luke 4:42-43Jesus purpose was evangelism. His goal was the redemption of His people. Preaching (heralding) the Good News of the kingdom of God was the main part of His plan. He would also teach, do miracles, and make disciples.
38.7 And He was preaching in the synagogues of Galilee. Luke 4:44
