At Jesus' Feet!
1. Blessed is the man... whose delight is in the law of the Lord. And in His law he meditates day and night. He shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, That brings forth its fruit in its season. Whose leaf also shall not wither; And whatever he does shall prosper. Psalm 1:2-3
2. The Hebrew word for "meditate" is "mumble" or "converse with oneself." Believers in those days would memorize passages of Scripture, then recite them back to themselves in their spare time, or as they were going about their work. Then they would ponder (let God speak to them) over the meaning of the verses. Thus they reminded themselves of God's great love and power, and bound their hearts to him. Of course, this helped them in their prayer life, and in everything they did.
3. David was a shepherd boy who led Israel's frightened armies to victory over their enemies. Eventually David became king of all Israel. He was constantly meditating upon the Word of God, and upon the works of God in history. (see Psalm 143:5 or Psalm 103:7) David was also familiar with the laws of Moses, and the covenant God had made with Israel. David saw the grace of God in all of these things, but is best known for the love of God he saw in nature.
4. Such meditation is a form of worship. David's heart would just sing the praises of God! The songs he sang are recorded in the Bible. We know them today as the Psalms.
5. Paul wrote to the new believers in Colossae...
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual sons, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. Colossians 3:16
note: There's that word "let" again.
"Dwell in you" means "live in you." Let it come alive. Learn it by heart, then ponder over it. Let the Holy Spirit make it live in you. Let Him teach you. God's Word is living, and it brings life. (Some verses might become songs of joy and praise, and deliverance.)
6. So here are just a few select Bible verses you can use to "love on God." And as you worship, you will become a victorious Christian, and an able minister. You will become strong.
Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen Ephesians 3:21
...being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ. Philippians 1:6
And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:19
...giving thanks to the Father who has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light. He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love. Colossians 1:12-13
7. Of course you will find thousands more verses in the Bible that will set you free. You will have a hard time deciding which ones to memorize. I believe you should memorize the ones that have changed your life. Seal the victory you have gained, and continue to walk in that victory. This becomes your testimony. You can use those verses to lead others to Christ. Your testimony is powerful.
8. When I was young, I went to a Christian grade school. We had to memorize one Bible verse every day. Before the end of third grade I knew 108 Bible verses by heart. To this day I have not forgotten even one. Those verses saved my life many times. Temptations came, and temptations went - but I did not fall because I had God's Word written on my heart. I was kept by the keeping power of God. I still have my little "Memory Book for Christian Schools." It means more to me with every passing day. I could have got no better start in life. I was taught at Jesus' feet. There is no better education. I am still being taught by what I learned then. The Holy Spirit of God is still bringing things to my remembrance and using it to teach me more. This is the foundation of my life, and I would not trade it for all the riches on earth! I have heard many other men and women of God say the same thing.
9. If you can find a memory book of Bible verses, and memorize just one verse a day, your life - and the lives of all those around you - will be profoundly impacted - because it will change your heart.
The fastest way to get a Bible verse from your head to your heart is to memorize it - then meditate upon it. i.e. Let the Holy Spirit speak to your heart through that verse.
10. Our walk with God is personal - not legalistic - so you may simply want to memorize the verses that jump out at you and change your life, as you read through the Bible. Those are the easiest ones to memorize because they mean something to you, and you want to memorize them, because you want them to be fixed in your heart - you want to remember what God has done for you! And you want to share them with others!
